Good Books???

mrbfrog Dec 22, 2003 09:06 PM

I am not really interested in getting a venomous snake but I would like to read about their care and handling, can anyone recommend good informative books? Also do most of you handle your snakes or are they purely display only???

Thanks

Define 'handle'...

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

. That is something that I am nor sure about, I am only used to handling non venomous, non aggressive snakes. I can pretty much do anything I want with my snakes as long as I don’t hurt them. My snakes have never struck at me or even hissed at me.
. I don’t know what people do with their venomous snakes, do you just move them with tongs, do you pick them up and not really worry about being bitten, do you almost never even open their cage because they are so aggressive. I understand that this all has to do with the particular person and the temperament of the snake. Is there a type of venomous snake that most of you would feel comfortable picking up without tongs and is there a type that most of you don’t even want to get near???

. thank you

If you own a snake you have to be able to move it around and also to restrain it for medical purposes. You can't just do nothing if they retain an eyecap. But to most venomous keepers, putting themselves in a situation where getting bitten is even possible isn't worth the risk, so however the snakes are handled, it's in a way that the snake can't bite. Some people can do this with their bare hands. I use hooks. If you do this, aggressive snakes are really no different to handle than calm ones. Calm ones are just a tad less nerve wracking.
