My new redfoot indoor enclosure

gabycher Dec 22, 2003 09:16 PM

As indoor enclosures are the 'big topic' right now, I am going to post two pics from the one my husband has been building for my redfoots over the last few weeks.
It is a corner (room divider) unit measuring 8' long on the long side and 5.5' on the shorter arm, 32" deep. The structure is built from maple plywood and completely lined with acrylic (sealed on the seems with acrylic sealer) to make it totally waterproof. The inside wood structure is lined with a terrarium rainforest background under the acrylic.
The cabinets under will give storage room and the part in the corner (you can see this in the Phase 2 pic) is going to be the future egg laying box (wishful thinking...).
The dome will be built from acrylic as well and have ventilation traps on top.
The unit will be equipped with an automated misting system, mercury vapor lamps and three ceramic heat emitters (on thermostats). Substrate will be reptile bark and spaghnum moss and there will be plenty of hiding places (half flower pots) and plants (unfortunately mainly artificial, as they are eating everything in sight).
The lucky girls / guys, who get this wonderful Christmasgift are one almost four years old female redfoot, two 9 months olds and a three months old hatchling. Until the young ones are going to catch up in size a small division wall will be installed over the corner of the unit.

This is Phase 2, the wood structure:

And this is Phase 3, with the background and acrylic lining installed.
The acrylic dome will be the last step and hopefully be finished over the next week. I'll post a picture of the end product then.
