Leo's sight and Jak plays Peek-a-boo

chikimonke Dec 22, 2003 11:21 PM

I've been wondering how well a Leo's sight really is. When I'm holding Jak, and letting him crawl on my hands, he'll try to step off of my hand, only to have me put my free hand there for him to step on. I'm not sure if he doesn't have any depth perception, or is just a really trusting and smart gecko and knows my hand will be there for him. (this is all at night, after the lights have gone out)

Also, Jak doesn't like to have his view blocked. It's kind of funny actually. If I put my free hand in front of him, he will not hesitate to climb the hand so that he can see over it. However, he always stops with three feet on the new hand, and always leaves one foot on my other hand. And he'll stay like that looking around for a couple of minutes at a time. Eventually I'll get my other hand free and "block" his view, only to have the whole process started over again. He'd do it forever if my arms didn't get tired =) Also, if my hand is flat and he's laying there, he usually is looking down over my hand, if I put a hand in his way, he'll climb down to that hand so he can get a better view again. Very fun to watch.

And lastly, has there been any studies into what a leo is actually seeing? I've seen pictures of what a cat sees and what a dog sees, and even what bees and flies see, anychance there's something along those lines for leos? Sorry this got so long, but I haven't been posting lately, and the questions and stories had built up =)

Sorry, don't know the scientific answers to your questions but that is a cute pic!!!

I know snakes see heat but I don't think geckos do, I'm not sure about that though. I have noticed that my geckos love to watch television. I have some in my office and if I turn the TV on at night they will come out to watch it.

I think geckos see/recognize movement better than objects.

I'm not sure how tall the rocky outcroppings are where geckos live in the wild, but from what I've seen I hope they aren't too tall cause I think geckos would fall right off them all the time. I've found geckos that escaped my herp room upstairs in my kitchen downstairs- that means they fell down each stair.

Well, my leo seems to retain some depth perception. If I'm holding him, he'll usually peer down the side of my hand. If my hand is a few feet from the ground, he'll turn around and look down the other side, and usually just stay put. However, if my hand in just a few inches from the ground, he'll move the crawl down. Because of this, I've come to realize that he knows what his limits are, and knows how far he can fall without injury.
