I.D. of pixies (P. edulis vs. P. adspersus)

pirlhart Dec 23, 2003 08:43 AM

There seems to be so much confusion in regards to the identification of the two "pixie" frogs. In contacting vendors and hobbiests it is amazing to find how many don't even know there are two different pixies even though they may own one or have some for sale. In my opinion, the juvenile/adults are quite obvious and easy to I.D. it is the smaller ones that seem to present the most difficulty for a positive identification(for me anyway). Which would you say the following picture is? P. edulis(dwarf pixie) or P. adspersus(giant pixie)?

I got my little guy from Jay, great guy very friendly, Goblet arrived when he said, and he is so very healthy ! I'm super pleased.
But as you said, it is hard when they are small.

I told you in post below, He is only 1 1/2 in. But I was insured, when I emailed and asked, (before purchasing, that he was indeed P. Adspersus !

Ask them to take a few more pictures? The flash has altered the color somewhat and an above shot is not always the best (though with other pics, it can be helpful). The almost greenish stripes seem to indicate adspersus, but that one is tough call. If you could ask them to take some more pics, I can maybe get that nailed down as I have kept both species from froglets. Andy

These may not be the best quality but they were taken in natural light to provide the best colors.

Thanks for the quick response Andy. Also, I just put 2 and 2 together and the frog I've been posting pictures of is from the same "batch" that Eve got her frog from. I had both a P. edulis and P. adspersus that I had for several years. Of course both were housed seperately, but in the same room, and then mysteriously I found both dead within days of eachother a few months ago. I want to get one of each again since I thoroughly enjoyed them so I.D. prior to buying the first one wasn't that large of a concern. I actually figured that once in hand, I would be able to I.D. the frog fairly easily since the adults were so dramatically different in appearance. I guessed completely wrong. All I could say was that he was a cute little bugger.... I contacted Jay, the seller, and he assures me, as you do, that this one is a P. adspersus. Thanks again.

Did you happen to use anything like no pest strips or something comparable to that? I know people that have used them for snakes and the amphibians ended up dying when kept in the same room. Could explain it, but who knows. Without a necropsy, and even then, it is hard to tell. Good luck. Andy
