domina Dec 23, 2003 12:07 PM

Has anyone used the coco fiber-panels or the mats for hanging flower baskets you can get at your local nurseries (basicly the same thing)for floring a Leo cage?I want them to be able to dig becase I know they enjoy it but all this contreversy about whats good and bad gets us nowhere. So I guess I'll see what people think about plan B.Or mabye a combination of everything..any thoughts?

Thanks again!

I know this response isn't very helpful, just wanted to let you know someone is out there. I'm not even sure what material it is that you are referring to.

Any idea of exactly what it's made of? I assume "coco" means coconut, which seems like it should be ok since people use coconut husks as hides, but beware any preservatives, chemicals, or whatnot that they might use in manufacturing. Sorry, not real helpful. I'm also not exactly sure what these are.

that's okay.
Cocco-fiber comes in rolls or sheets / panels. It is made from coconut shell fibers not coursely ground like bed-a-beast but long fibers kind of mashed and woven all together. It is used by some in keeping dartfrogs.mostly for a naturalistic back ground. I wish I had a camera so i could show you.sorry!Generally the panel kind is more rigid than the type that comes in rolls.I get this stuff from a nursery that sells it by the square foot. They use it for lining wire baskets that people plant flowers in.it is about 1/4 inch thick (I think most is thicker) it is so woven together that it is almost as strong as hemp rope.It isn't dusty unless you cut it, but holds moisture. And looks almost hairy with all the fibers.I keep it in my tokay terarium.I don't know if this helps but if anything mabye you might give it a try.I have never noticed any signs of impaction in my tokays, but I have never owned a Leo before and they obviously have very different personalities/habbits.

anyway thanks again,
ANDY

I dnont think its a good idea. Those things are only used for backgrounds for either cover, or mounting epiphytic plants onto them.

It also doesnt allow much heat through (usless for UTH), and would be a pain to clean imo.
