Upside Down Crested Gecko!?!?!?!

snakepimp Dec 23, 2003 12:54 PM

I have this little 16gram femal that I just got who seems normal, and who is eating and pooping, but she lays on her back for a minute or two @ a time, then flips over. She is really a spaz... is this a normal behavior? I hope it isn't a health problem, cause I just got a trio, and they were shipped together, and together they remain....any ideas? Will post this to the Gecko:general forum too....

. . . I have never seen ANY gecko do that. In fact, I think they only time I've seen that is with a Western Hognose, bluffing death.

I am just guessing - but that looks seizure related, don't you think? I think it would be worth having him checked out. But I'm just speculating. . . .

Definitely seizure related. Probably lack of calcium. Take it to a vet!

She does have a lack of the calcium reverve lumps in the roof of her mouth that I have seen photos of in the Rhac book, and elsewhere, I will just supplement her heavily for a couple of weeks, 'cause she otherwise acts pretty normal. Anybody feed their cresteds with an eydropper, I'd like to get her some calcium going...immediately. The breeder I bought her from is quite reputable, and i think he'll cover me if anything happens, but this is just weird...she's so cute, I hope nothing bad happens to her. My vet is on vacation, and doesn't know his ass from a Rhacodactylus anyway (he's always on vacation it seems) but he is good with eggbound snakes Oh crap, now I'm ranting thanks everyone. Happy holidays

I'm almost positive that upsidedown geckos=stopped breathing, unconsciousness, and possibly death...at least that is what I was told for tokays...I think if she does that...flip her over...pump her with calcium....good luck

I have flipped her over most of the time, but twice I just watched. Her respiration, and other outward vital signs seem the same as when she's upright, and normal compared to my other cresties. She only does it when shes climbing and slips and falls. It's like she just lays there despondent over her climbing mishap. I don't know. I am going to supplement her somewhat heavily for a while she's too damn cute to lose. I am goofy for those little suckers. I can't wait to save enough money for some leachianus!!!

i can't say for sure that this applies to geckos, but with uromastyx, if a female is approached by a male for breeding and she can't breed for whatever reason (she's just laid eggs, is gravid, etc) she flips over onto her back.
