Okay maybe the voices are back again, but I swear one of my muddpuppies stuck his head out of the water and barked!
If I remember correctly that is why they were called mudpuppies to begin with....barking like a puppy. I can't find that reference off hand though, so I'm going off of memory here.

Hope my opinions help,
Rob
did it sound exactly like dog?
it sounded like short bark from a small dog. I though I was going crazy.
Ranchers around here put them in stock tanks to help keep the water clean. Some have said they've heard a mudpuppy "bark."
I thought it was just some old cowboy legend that started after too long of a night at the honkytonk!
Thanks for the input. I don't if its scientifically accepted that they can vocalize, but they definetly can. I wonder if its stress response, at the time the filter had quit running and my have reduced the available oxygen causing them stress, or if its a breeding call? if they typically called under water I wonder if anyone would notice it.
