Fire Skink Lighting Heat

ecbiomajor Dec 23, 2003 02:27 PM

I am looking for suggestions on how to maintain an adequate humidity level in the tank, and still provide a basking lamp. The lamps seem to just dry everything out. Also, what is the verdict on UV lighting, necessary? not necessary? If anyone has any advice let me know.

A UV source is not required. Some keepers use them, others don't, and some have experimented both ways. The general consensus seems to be that its not needed for these primarily fossorial skinks.

As far as heat/humidity go, I've graded the substrate in my cage from 2 inches on the low side to 8 on the high side. I placed a large, angular slab of sandstone in the middle of the plateau and positioned the basking light over it. By maintaining a good moisture level in the soil, the humidity seems to take care of itself. I also mist the entire cage heavily twice a day and have a large water dish in one corner.
