Combine Two Neodeshas Into One ???

drdoolittle Dec 23, 2003 03:54 PM

I was just scanning the Kingsnake classifieds and had a crazy idea which leads to this question - does anyone have any ideas or experience with combining two Neodesha cages into one bigger cage? There are some very good deals on 36 inch used neodeshas but I need a 6 foot cage for a growing Dumeril's Boa. A used 6 foot vision is going for over $300 but I could get two 36 inch neodeshas for half that amount.

I know there are some very creative people out there since I've been lurking on these forums for a long time so ..... what does everyone think - worth the trouble or not?

If you are talking about the 36" standard sloped-front cage.. forget it. If you're talking the 36" custom cage (which is actually like 32"W x 29"D x 18"H) then it is possible. You would probably need a large dia ABS pipe as the pass-thru. This is similar to what Neodesha used to do with their arboreal cages as an option. You're just modifying that design for a larger animal.

One possible catch: there is a seam about 1/2 way up the cage side. You would either avoid that seam or else carefully cut through it. Make sure you use a jigsaw blade appropriate for plastic.

Let me know how it goes if you do it.

My thinking was that with a totally terrestrial snake like a Dumerils Boa the important thing is floor space, ie square footage. Using a tube to connect two cages really just gives you two approx. six square foot cages with a pass thru instead of one large cage with around 12 square feet.

True, but since Neodeshas are not exactly rectangular, the idea of butting two along side each other gets more difficult. I'm sure there is a way, but I wouldn't spend the money and potentially damage two good cages. Buy the larger cage or get a smaller snake.. lol.
