copperheadkid Dec 23, 2003 04:37 PM

Ok I think one day (next summer maby) that ill get a red belly water snake(neridia erytrogaster erthogaster. I do snake removal and get a lot of calls to come get "mokisans" that turn out to be harmless water snakes. what kind settup would a 1-3 foot red belly do best in.

ps..im 16 and money is kinda tight so im looking for a CHEAP way but i want it to still be good for the snake.

Straight from the hip ... identical to the set-up of your corn (relative size to be considered) with the only exception being possibly a larger water dish for soaking. But keep an eye out for excessive soak periods (avoid skin blisters). I have'nt seen this as a problem unless the tank/substrate remains damp for any period of time.
Good luck, Michael

Redbelly Watersnakes are more terrestrial than other species of watersnake so they can be kept much like any other colubrid. I would suggest keeping them in a screen-topped glass aquarium of appropriate size and providing them with an overhead basking light. They also seem to enjoy thick bedding and numerous hiding spots. They'll readily eat fish or fish-scented mice. Good luck.
