Question about how friendly your leos are

uropat Dec 23, 2003 08:10 PM

I have read some posts below about peoples leos doing things like coming up to them, and really interacting with them (like telling them when they wanted food) but I have had my female since october and have seen no behaviors like this. She spends almost all of her time in her humid hide (has peat moss, as I thought she was gravid a while ago). Is there something I can do to get her to spend less time in her humid hide and start coming out? She is beginning to get obese as she is not very active, I know fat can be good, but I don't want a leo too fat. How did some of you get your leos to become more interactive with you?

i dont think this will help much but i didnt really do anything,
one of my females is always out watching whatever im doing and hanging out on the glass.

when i take her out she just sits in my hand and rarely moves from it.

i think patience will eventually make your leo more calm cause my other 3 are not like this at all, they run, hiss, and do that tail wave thing.

thanks for the reply, I guess I just have to work with her. She is not vicious with me or anithing, but she did get mean last night when I misted her by accident while misting her humid hide, she hissed, and then went running at the mister trying to bite it.

With adult geckos just handling them regularly at their comfort level helps. What I mean is let your gecko decode what it is comfortable with. If it doesn't want to sit on your hand (squirms, tries to jump off, etc...) try sitting on your bed and putting it on your leg and letting it explore. Make each experience with you a positive one. You can also buy some waxies and handfeed ONE to your gecko during handling, so it associates your picking it up with getting a treat. However different geckos DO have different personalities.

Your fingers make a much bigger target than a cricket or mealworm. I hand fed my first two leos as babies, but switched to forceps after my little boy grew up. A full grown male can take a sizable chunk out of a finger as I learned the hard way

hehehe They don't bite that hard unless they're trying to kill you,
I had a gecko fight break out last year and this is the result. When feeding I find that they will let go as long as you don't jerk your finger away when they nip it

Two of my three leos are extremely friendly and will walk into my hand without any hesitation. My third, however is a tazzie devil and fortunately for me, never offers to bit at all. Interestingly, the most friendly of all is one that bit a lot when she was a juvenile. I feel that inquisitive leos leos can easliy learn that you are no harm and mean food and warmth. Calm leos are great, because they seem to take handling and sitting one's hand or on the shoulder easliy. Especially now in the cooler weather, the leos love to sit in your warm hand to absorb heat. Go SLOW in your movements and let them smell and lick you. They will learn your scent and regard you as a big heating pad or food source. Keep at it and don't stress them and you will have some cool little buddies. Rob R.

I just improved the environment with tock structures to climb on and a lot more to do, and she is already way more active. as for the hand feeding, she actually walked into my hand to eat mealie today I guess she likes me more than I Thought.
