thumbnail tank size

mbmcewen Dec 24, 2003 09:14 AM

Just curious as to the recommended tank size for maybe 4 thumbs? I was looking at glasscages.com 22 gal high, open front for some future vents or imitators.

Thanks

a 22 gallon would be perfectly suited for a group of thumbnails. I've housed 7 vent froglets in a standard 10 gallon once and had no problems at all. This was mainly due to space limitations andI don;t really endorse doing so.

I keep 2 imitator in a 20gal high converted to a front opening. I have kept 3 in a 20 before, but you have to be very careful. Male imitator will fight and the less dominate can/will die from stress. Now if the imitator are raised together, they MIGHT get along. You would really be best to keep pairs in 20verts, but you can get away with 10verts. The frogs are more active and just seem happier in the 20's over the 10's. I have also made a side opening 20 vert that worked great for front viewing. Here are 2 links about each tank:

Also be careful when choosing a tank. Imitator and Vents can squeeze out through VERY small openings. I lookad at the 22gallon front opening tank on the link you gave, and if that is the same company as "The dollar a gallon people" you will have to put something around the top of the door so the frogs don't get out.

Good luck with the thumbnails, they are a great frog!

Thanks for the heads up. I am sure they are the same company, because they have unbelievable prices. I am considering making my own from scratch, using 1/8" sheet glass from HD or Lowes. I make stained glass windows sometimes, and have all of the necessary tools.

I like 15gal high tanks, but they can be hard to find. They are only about $19 or so and offer a good amoung of space. Not sure if I would put 4 in it, but my imitators only really use the upper left of the tank. They do go off to the other parts, but spend most of the time by the one brom.

Hi,

I keep 6 "golden" amazonicus in a 20 tall and they are just starting to breed. The tank dose not seem crowded at all and they are doing just fine. I keep my 6 panguana lamasi in a 29 gal tank and am adding 4 more soon, I do not forsee any problems.

Hi,

My amazonicus are always very interesting and they call almost constantly. Mine are not the standard red amazonicus but are the "golden" amazonicus (f2s from Tor Limbo) they are also known as "peruvian vents" but differ in throat pattern, color intesity and belly coloration from the standart "vent". They are very active and nice to watch. It took the males a while to call well and for around a month I heard all sorts of interesting sounds coming from their tank. They are one of my favorite frogs because they are more active than most of my other thumbnails. I would reccomend buying a small brom for their tank because they really like to be able to wedge themselves in. I hope that this helps.
