Question about Normals.

Sillygirl Dec 24, 2003 09:54 AM

Ok I am sure this was answered somewhere but for the life of me I can't find it. What is the difference between a normal corn and a Classic corn. I know they both have the same colorations, and I've been told be different people that my new corn is a normal (which is what I bought her as at the herp store) and another has told me that it is a Classic? Here is a picture of Pepperkorn would love to know what she is other then I think she/he is beautifully patterned. Thanks.

Not sure what month it was hatched but it measures about 21' long and just shed less then a week before this picture was taken. Here is another pic if it helps.

Hi SillyGirl, this is my opinion (and mine only) on the situation. A "classic" corn is probably another name for an "Okeetee Phase" corn. They exhibit the coloration and markings that are generally seen on the awesome corns from the Okeetee region of South Carolina, but may not have any bloodlines from that locality whatsoever. A locality purist would not accept any corn designated as an Okeetee unless it has pure bloodlines that can be traced back to corns originally captured from that area. However, some breeders have line bred corns to accentuate the traits that made many of the wild corns from the Okeetee region famous (rich colors, broad black bands around the blotches, etc). Since they may not be locality pure but have the awesome coloration, they are called "Okeetee phase", or "Classic". The locality purists selling true Okeetee corns will advertise where the stock came from like Haphazard Road, Jasper County, or other designations to prove their stock came from the Okeetee region in South Carolina. Anyone that has collected corns in the wild knows that not all corns are created equal in beauty, even when caught together. So, you could buy a pure Okeetee locality corn that turns out ugly. Its a aimilar situation with Miami phase corns that were originally captured in Dade County around the Miami area. The corns from that area typically have clean silvery grey background color with little to no orange bleeding, with bright reddish orange blotches.

Hope this helps understand the name game some!!

Chantel,

"Classic" is just a fancy way of saying "normal."
I have to say that you have a fine looking classic/normal,
with lots of orange.

I somewhat disagree. Like cathy said a good breeder will say a corn is classic if it is a nice normal without okeetee in it. I call mine normal if they are not good looking and come from a double or triple het project.

IMHO

they were not pure okeetee, but were really pretty. Some have a lot of okeetee blood, but have been outcrossed to stripes, amels, etc; some come from my special "Naples" line, and some have a lot of bloodred, so have enhanced red. Some of my classics may look like an okeetee, but some may look completely different. But all will be pretty.

A different breeder may have completely different parameters for the use of the name "classic". So you should ask any breeder who uses the name to describe what it means to them.

Just thought I'd throw this in. It's not a great pic but it's all I got. I wish more people would post more normals for comparison. Her name is Norma.
