Hi-

Well it is just a natural reflex for chameleons to use there tongues to capture food. If they really want the food item and there tongue can not bring it to them, they will go to the food source. Some chameleons like to get up close to there pray items and some just shoot there tongue when they are in rage of the pray. Hope this helps!

P.S.- Are you using just plain lettuce or are you using a green leaf lettuce? The green leaf lettuces will be better then regular lettuce which is mostly water.

Happy Holidays!

I have seen my cham do that when i put a hornworm in there once. it had a better hold on the vine. It was quite remarkable to see the cham goto the worm so fast and so balanced using it's tail and front legs only to support itself while it removed the worm from the vine. what a great animal.
