Beardie Family in one tank?

kaduku Dec 24, 2003 04:08 PM

Hi, I have a male and female bearded dragon in a 60gal tank. They have been tank mates since they were coming up on sexual maturity. The tank is very large and they are now starting to mate. I was wondering if I could keep about 2 in there with the parents? Im going to sell the rest.

babies will get stomped on, intimidated, stressed out, starved and at worst they become food!!

only keep Beardies of similar size together, and never 2 males.

Having a male and a female together all the time can get very stressfull for them. Even professional breeders don't keep their pairs together all the time, but rather introduce them to each other for small periods of time, so that they are able to breed.

If you insist on keeping two beardies together in the same enclosure, they should be two females, and they should be watched closely in case they don't get along. Beardies do best on their own.

Actually, I keep my pair together all the time and they get along fine. Male and female. No dominance issue, no over-breeding. I also talked to the breeder that lives north of here and she said that she has no problems either.

My friend keeps her pair together constantly, he goes under the rock, she goes on tiop, I've never seen them fight or anything. they love each other...

Good for you guys. But this is, as far as I can tell, not recommended by anyone (except that one breeder, obviously...), and I would definitly not do it. But of course, people say "I have used calci-sand with no problems" or "I've housed 4 beardies in a 30 gallon tank with no problems". Yes, it is possible, but it's not good and it's certainly not recommended.

a 60 gallon tank is way to small for 4 beardies (you said you wanted to keep the two you already have, in addition to two more of their offspring, correct?). some will say a 60 gallon is even too small for two. I agree with what the others have said as well.
