Victory! My finicky young ball finally ate tonight after a 5 week fast. Pretty important because she's quite small as it is and I was getting nervous.
My kids have 2 pet gerbils and I bought a live mouse (I know, I know - I plan on feeding her f/t) and kept it in a container with some of the gerbils' bedding for half the day and the ball snatched it up like lightning (within 20 seconds of entering the viv.)!
This was my first successful feeding since purchase. She struck hard and dispatched the mouse quickly. She's now in the hide above the heat mat sleeping it off. In honer of Christmas eve, I imagine she has visions of sugar plum-fattened mice dancing in her head.
