Emergency question about sexing Western Hognoses needed for tomorrow

MissHisssss Dec 24, 2003 09:49 PM

I'm going over to look at some Western Hognoses tomorrow. I'm looking for a pair. They said they have three snakes with two having shorter tails than the third... but the third one .... mmmm... I'll explain it like they did. They all have lines on their tails, like on a peice of paper... and the third on has just one more line than the other two so it might be the opposite sex. I would thing that it would have to have more lines (length) to it than that. If I've made any sense at all.... do you all think they are all the same sex?

Thanks in advance

Well if they are hatchlings I would "pop" them and look for a hemipenis. If they are older get them probed. I have two 2002 Easterns that I thought were a pair since one's tail was 2x the lenght of the other one. Last month I probed them and they are both female. Funny how that is.

Thanks for the advice... but they wouldn't pop them. They do their corns, but wouldn't do these for some reason. Too small to prob too... so they sorta thought they had two girls and a boy by tail length, but no promises. I really liked the lightest colored girl but she was thin and wouldn't eat whereas the other two did, so I took them. They are from a clutch of 17 or 18 from a wild caught Ma that was bred before she was caught. One looks a tad green and the other looks a tad red... and I mean tad. They are small. They are cute a little buttons. I hope I made the right decission with them being from wild caught and all.

My first Hognoses. I'm tickled plum to death.

The MOM was wild caught.

The offspring are Captive Born.
Hope this makes you feel better.

Yes, the Ma was wild caught. She was gravid at the time of capture.

I just noticed that I said that they were wild caught in my last post. I meant to say the Ma was. Sorry bout that.

The more I see these little cuties... the more I like them.
