looking for a good cheap UTH

aremycanvas Dec 25, 2003 07:06 AM

hi,

im the owner of a new leopard gecko and right now i have him in a 20 gallon tank with a flukers 8.5"" clamp lamp with a 40 watt T-Rex "Tbulb" Neodymium heating lamp. The Neodymium is supposed to enhance color of my gecko. I was wondering if this lighting is enough to keep him warm. He sleep right under it in his hiding spot on the right side of the cage. However, to save on the heating bill my house is auto programmed to drop temps to the lower 60's at night. I live in Connetitcut and sometimes it gets cold. I'm not sure if this 40 watt bulb is enough. Do you think I need to purchase a UTH? and if so what should i buy?

I'd say yes. People on the forums I read are pretty adamant about leos needing "belly heat" & often stress that a UTH is more important than a heat lamp. I had one of my girls w/ only a lamp & she wasn't eating well. I added a UTH & she perked right up. Personally, I use both, w/ my lights on timers so they're off at night.

I forgot to answer about where to find cheap UTHs. I've bought my last 3 from my local Petsmart. I look them up on the internet, print out the page w/ UTH prices & take it to the local store. It's saved me $10 each on my last 3 because their on line prices are much lower than their store prices & they have to match it, 'cause it's their own stuff! Plus, I get it right away w/o paying shipping.

They are all the same, you should probably get the zoomed one. Since get one not the whole size of your tank bu maybe like half or like a small one where you gecko likes to hang out the most. But I would do the half side thing b/c there is like a rule, make a cool side and a warm side in your tank.Oh yeah, get a thermostat to control the heat just in case it over does it. Good Luck!!

They only range a few dollars so I recommend the TRex Cobra heat mat. It's the best on the market for just a few bucks more. It the safest, it doesn't get too hot, and you can remove it if you want to change tanks.
I use several of them myself even in the cage under the sand. It's the only one that is recommended for IN tank heating.
