REFrozen Rats... please read...

savysav Feb 07, 2003 11:06 AM

I accidentally left out a tray of vacuum sealed rats in it's shipping box at room temperature for about 3 days. When I realized what I did I threw the tray back into the freezer. Can I still give it to my savannah monitor or throw it out and take the loss.

thanks for the help...

Well, let's put it this way... would you eat meat that had been sitting out for three days? I don't think it's safe. Just try to be more careful in the future.

Aren't the larger monitors such as waters and komodo dragons known to dig up human corpses and eat them?

I would think the three day old rat is in better shape than that!

I would be more concerned with your own saftey of handling potentially rotten meat.

...my two cents

All monitors eat carrion in the wild. However, I wouldn't even think about giving the 3 day old mice to him because of the possibility of germs/diseases. We want only the best for our captives. Monitors in the wild are (usually) full of parasites and things anyway.
