do beardies have a third eye?

pacman101 Dec 25, 2003 03:38 PM

I have heard that tuataras and many lizards have a third eye situated on top of their head which is part of a complex organ. When i first bought my bd i saw something on its head and wondered what it was. Do beardeds have a third eye? Also it is guessed that is helps in regulation of body temperature.

Yes, the little "hole" on top of the beardie's head is its third eye

Haha thats what I thought. One of my relatives said they have a third eye on top of their head and i looked at him like he was insane until i remembered the dot on his head and the next day i happened to read it in a book.

Yep! and it's quite amazing sometimes, Dex (my bd) sometimes "sees" a bird or plane cross the sun and ducks or tries to run / hide when I am SURE he could not have seen it or had anyother reason to react.

also that eye seems to be part of how they set the "clock" that tells them how long the day is.

it also seems to need to get light to help them want to feed and other stuff...

this is also part of the advise of "approach from the front"
at least one or two times a week Dex will be strolling and I wind up coming up from the rear, he "sees" my shadow and goes into defense mode untill he sees it's just me.

The third eye is a "bump" right in the very center of his head, equi-distant from his primary eyes, and bisecting the "line" from the center of the snout to the nape of the neck. This "eye" as it were is below the skin, and can sense changes in UVa and UVb lighting from tenths to possibly hundredths of a degree. So, if something cuts across his "field of view" above him, he will react to it as if his normal eyes actually saw movement. With it, he can reposition himself during bright sunny days to get the most angle of light he can. Hope this helps.
