My hatchlings cage

rttlrvenom Dec 25, 2003 05:53 PM

well just got a pic of it here it is here is no thermometer yet getting 2 tomorrow. She/he is spending most of the time on the cool side though. But my room is 75 degrees plus the UTH and lamp w/ a 75 watt bulb. the normal 2 hides, waterdish, and a piece of wood i got off of one of those orange baskets, i have ripped up paper towels for substrate, she like burrowing in them. Any questions or comments would be appreaciated. I would of liked to have the cage set up before i got my corn but my step dad just kinda supprised me with it.

You may want to decrease the wattage of the bulb over the hot side with the UTH in place. In fact, you may be able to get rid of the light completely, or switch to a non-heat producing bulb. If the UTH is not on a rheostat or thermostat, it may be getting too warm on the hot side. A good rule of thumb for the UTH is that you should be able to put your hand on top of the heat source and leave it there indefinitely. Your hand should never get so hot that it becomes painful, or even uncomfortable. Just warm and toasty. Remember, you are only shooting for mid to upper 80s at best in most cases in that specific area of the cage. Another option is to just use the light so there is a warm basking spot. Once again, check with the thermometers and adjust the wattage accordingly. You can even use a red bulb so it doesn't bother the snake at night. I think the UTH and the 75 watt bulb may be overdoing it. Just my opinion and you really should monitor with thermometers ASAP. I think the corn would do OK with an ambient room temp of mid 70s as well.

good looking set up, but probably a bit too warm. Remember, corns are North American snakes, not tropical. Currently, your snake probably thinks it's in the middle of a serious heat wave.

I agree with the other respondant, you could loose the lamp, or at least drop the wattage way down.

enjoy your corn.

thanks a lot both of you i had no idea tht it was probably to hot for her. like i posted before there is no theremometer in the tank yet but there will be today. since she's near a window im tunring the lamp off til i can get thermometers. Mabe that was why she was so active at night (cause of lower temps) and very sleepy during the day (i know there nocturnal)

Thanx again

then you will definitely need to move it NOW! Because that can raise the temps to a lethal level VERY fast.

Make sure you put the thermometers on the bottom of the cage, directly over the hot spot. And buy the little ones that look like clocks, those temp strip ones may work on fish tanks, but not on snake tanks. Or you can get one from radio shack for about $15 that is digital.
