Is there something besides crickets?

UroJade Dec 25, 2003 07:20 PM

i have 3 blue tailed tree lizards,1 dune gecko and one 3-4" american toad
the blue tails eat 1/4 crickets
the gecko eats 3/4 crickets
and the toad eats 3/4-adult crickets
its there something besides crikets that i can maybe breed thats good for and safe for them all to eat? like some thing that i could feed the babies to the blue tails?

i've been ordering about 1000 crikets a week to everyother week since may and im just tired of them im not bothered by the small i guess im used to it but it bothers my freinds and family and im tired of the crikets dieing all the time

Get some roaches. Lobster roaches are cheap to buy, nutricious, and once you have them going you'll never have to buy cricket's or more roaches.Lobster roaches reproduce fast the only thing is they can climb glass, plastic and just about anything else. You can use vasoline (3 inch band around the top of the enclosure). There is also a product sold at www.cricketfood.com called bugstop. It keeps them from climbing out and lasts a very long time with reapplication. You can get non climbing species like orange heads and Discoids which i have. Most hear the word roaches and think no way. I said it and now i wouldn't go back to crickets again. Roaches don't stink, don't make noise, inexspensive, and once your colony is going your monthly food bill is gone.

I would appeal to her mom senses.....Roaches smell less (huge plus to me) I clean mine like twice a year....'nother big plus, they eat a better variety (so less buying special stuff- mine get dog kibble and stale cereals etc) and once you get them started you don't have to throw $20 a thousand out for Crickets all the time (huge plus here!!!). Lots of savings. works for me as the mom.

Though I understand she may find them nasty or worry that they will get loose and infest the house. I don't worry about that as I am in upstate NY and it is cold enough here to kill them off if they aren't in the heated room. RARELY do any of mine get out. And then it is a known escape and we catch it right away. (hey, my daughter freaks if they climb on her)

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with the software.

it was hard enough to get her to exept 1000 crickets being in the house all at once, i oreder a bearded dragon and told her that it was going to need lots of crickets , not till it was on its was did she give in. im thinking about starting by telling her their lobster "beatles"

Very good idea calling them beetles! BUT if you get lobsters, they ARE climbers so be sure to check up on how to maintain them.

There are many 'beetle' varieties to choose from
