tokay question

kalidraven Dec 25, 2003 10:52 PM

how would i go about removing shed from the tip of the tail without greatly stressing the animal by force holding it?

Good question because unless hes extremely tame he wont hold still and will struggle while trying. One thing I've found that helps alot is to wrap a hand towel around the Tokay including his head and keep its eyes covered. They seem to stay calmer when then cant see plus wrapped in the towel wont be able to struggle trying to get away. You should be able to get to his tail easily and hold him. Hope this will help, good luck.

this should be quite the adventure, the moment the cage door is opened there all ready to battle lol.

all i hope for is when i go to grab the one i need the other two dont get any idea's that my hand looks like a good lunch.

one of them is frigging huge and he make me nervous when im in there either to clean or to offer pinkies by tongs.

it should be quick its a very small piece of shed left over, maybe one minute at most and it will be over i just dont need any tokay wounds on my hands.

thanks for the tip as that will be the way im going.

Use the small towel between your hand and the gecko, I drape the towel using one hand down over the Tokays head and body then use the other to cup the gecko with towel in front of the hand. Keep the covered the whole time. The Tokay will never see your hand till its closing around him. Gently remove it from what its stuck to and wrap the towel around him with your free hand covering his head. Now it cant see or bite and normally dont struggle near as much. Ive had better success this way than chasing them around, even with a glove on. When I get them out is when I release them on my arm and uncover them and their usually fine.

If it is only a small piece, just raise humidity and leave it alone. Unless it has major problems shedding I wouldnt recommend handling it at all. This assumes ofcourse that you didnt already know this

well i didnt after all have to remove the shed, must have come off that night cause the next afternoon i went in there and it was gone.

BTW the humidity is always high in the tank,it usually 85% or so all day long.

good, that towel thing works very well if you need to catch your Tokays and they like to bite.

The answer is DON'T. If it's just the tip of the tail and a little bit of shed left, it will fall off on its own. Keep up the humidity in the terrarium. About 80% while shedding. Simply cover--3/4ths of it--the top with glass. use an under the tank heater and set a bowel of water on top of where the heater is located. Also daily misting. and keep BED-A-BEAST barely moist.

DO NOT STRESS OUT YOUR TOKAY. Once she trusts you, which may even take a year-she will not be afraid of being handled at all. Contrary to popular belief, Tokays are NOT mean, but only bite if they are afraid of you. My tokay is gentle and sweet. She would care less about held or petted. She rather enjoys the attention. I can't even imagine her biting me because she's so gentle. And she was not captive born either.

I handfeed my tokay, which increases bonding. In fact she will refuse to eat unless I handfeed to her.
