Abused gecko. Would appreciate help. (Kind of long)

My friend and i both bought geckos at the same time. Its been about 3 months. My friend called me up about two and a half weeks ago and said he was having problems. Apparently his gecko makes him mad sometimes. Dont ask me why, when i asked him why he just said, "i dont know." Well, he must've been getting really ticked off because he said his temper would take over him and he would abuse her. He wouldnt tell me how he abused her either. So i told him he needed to get rid of her because pets are obviously not for him. He didnt know what to do so i agreed to take her, i have a 20 gal long with a female in it. I brought the abused gecko home and she stays in a humid hide 24/7. Will she ever gain trust in humans after being abused?? I took her to a vet and she is ok.
Eating is another problem. I have to put mealworms in a dish and slide it right to her hide and tilt it or she doesnt see the mealworms. This makes it easy for mealworms to escape and i have to sit there and watch her for about half an hour to make sure she eats.
I havnt handled her or anything and dont plan on it for a while. Any suggestions on how to help an abused gecko? Will it take long for her to get over her fear and trust me? Will i always have to feed her like that? Because thats a real hassle.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I wouldn't hassle her with mealworms or crickets...as long as she is not skinny...leave her alone for a three or four days...that should give her time to settle in and build an appetite...then throw in some crickets and see if she'll eat them...i'm sure she'll be okay as long as you don't overly stress her...after a week or so you should be able to hold her for 15-20 min sessions...if she's not used to you don't give up...but also use your judgement...if she looks stressed don't bother her.

Also, keep her on paper towels for now...it's much easier to moniter them and make sure she has plenty of hides...good luck

You would be so surprised how many people abuse and neglect their reptiles. I am currently the caretaker of 6 geckos that were neglected or abused.
What is frightening is people who abuse and neglect animals will abuse and neglect people too. It's part of their nature. I agree with you that this guy needs a new friend or needs to convince the friend to get therapy ASAP. Neglect I can understand but abuse ... NO WAY. It's beyond me how a gecko could get anyone mad. They aren't destructive. What could they possibly do to anger someone.
