Silkworm Pupae for Frogs

turtlesong Dec 26, 2003 04:37 AM

I'm feeding a food that is meant for human consumption to a juvenile bullfrog. The food is kind of pungent and may contain some seasoning, or salt, but I'm not sure. Well anyway, it's a small insect like larvae you can by at a store in South Korea called a silkworm and is about the size of a cicada's behind.

My question is,is this harmful to a bullfrog if it is salty or in anyway seasoned, which it might be? He's eating it, and I know it's high in protein. But I hope it isn't harming its digestive system.

Hi again,

They would be fine if they don't contain salt or preservatives/ flavourings, silkworms are a great food for frogs, see if you can find any live ones, When you bought them was there a packet or where they sold loose?

Hi clawedfrogs. I bought these in a package wrapped in clear plastic on top and styrofoam at the bottom. I asked the lady if they contain salt and she said "No," but they taste a little salty and pungent so I'm not sure if they have preservatives added. My frog is eating them like hotcakes. . .But no, they aren't live. I dangle them in front of him with fish line which I insert through holes made in the pupae with a toothpick, tie a small not at the end, and bingo!! He slurps them up!

I just hope they "are" okay even if they do contain preservatives. How will this hurt the frog? Please comment.

Now it's perfect and no one answers. Sheesh!!

No, sorry mod folks. I'm a quasi-writer and used to revision. I thought the computer would delete the others.

Hi,

If the frogs seems to like them then I would say that they probably aren't too bad, but don't feed them as a sole diet or too regularly, feed them intermitently. If they do contain salt the frog can become dehydrated and bloated even if water is present.

Chris,

Now that you've mentioned it, she does look a little bloated. I do feed her silworms intermittently, but I've also fed her fish from the sea, or anchovies. I mistakently thought these were freshwater minnows.

Well, I think she's all right but she looks bloated, so I'm wondering. How often should you feed a frog? Maybe I'm just overfeeding her. And I think it's a her but am not sure. How can I tell in bullfrogs?

I'm not sure how oftn to feed Bullfrogs but with clawed frogs theycan go a week between feedings. From searching on the net I found this about sexing:
Males have a yellow throat, females a white
Ear drums are the best way to tell them apart -
Males have big ear drums much bigger than their eyes and females have ear drums
about the same size as their eyes.

Hope this helps.

Chris.
