Handling new igs (one gravid)/ funny sleeping habit

SouthernBel Dec 26, 2003 12:35 PM

Yesterday I recieved two new iguanas from a friend who couldn't take care of them anymore. They are very fat and healthy and have been well taken care of. They like to be petted but aren't very fond of being picked up. The male is about 12 inches SVL and the female is about 14 inches SVL and she is gravid. I have given them my super nice setup and put my little Guru (7 1/2 inches SVL)in a smaller, but still nice, habitat until we can build another big one. I remember reading somewhere that it is best to give new iguanas a few days to settle in before handling them, but of course I am anxious to cuddle them! How long should I wait?
Also, I have always read that it was rare to find iguanas that could be kept together in the same cage, but these two are inseperable! They are in a huge cage with all kinds of lighting and two basking spots and yet the male actually sleeps and suns on top of the female! She seems to love it. He is a bit smaller than her so he climbs up and they lay their heads together to sleep! It is the cutest thing I have ever seen any reptiles do! Has anyone ever heard of this before? I will post some cute pics of them soon. Thanks!

It's not that unusual for iguanas that cohabitate to sleep close together or even sandwiched on top of each other. Some of my freeroamers have favorite "sleeping partners". Here is a good example with Jimmie and Kermit sleeping together. They are very special iguanas, both having been attacked by other animals causing facial disfigurement. Jimmie was attacked by a cat and lost an eye while Kermit was attacked by a larger iguana and lost a good part of his upper lip and one nostril.
