How wide do they get?

Tigergenesis Dec 26, 2003 12:42 PM

Think I may have talked my boyfriend into building a top for my Uro's tank (48l18w21h). I asked him about making a hinged door for me to get in and out of the tank. The door would be equal to the length of the tank (48", but I'm not sure how wide the door should be. My question is, would a 7" opening be wide enough for me to get my Uro (adult of course) in and out of the tank? Can it be smaller (maybe like 5" or do I need to go wider? I don't want it to be a tight squeeze. I've never seen an adult Uro so I have no idea how 'wide' they get.

I'm thinking either a Mali or a Saharan - male either way.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I have an oceanic systems lizard lounge for my adult bearded dragon. He's around 17" long (a little guy for an adult male), and as fat as an adult uro should be (I'm not positive though, because my adopted uro is overweight). The opening at the top of the lizard is about 5" wide, and the only time it can be a struggle is when sydney (the beardie) doesn't want to go back in. But, since the door is glass, there's not much he can do about it.

Here's a pick of the top from the inside (the entire top is 18" wide and 36" long):
