Anyone ever hear of these two totally different herps living together? One of my friends has 3 softshells and 4 fire-bellies and they live together in I think a 55 gallon tank.

To answer this as kindly as I can I'll say to him that this set up will not last long. I don't care how big or small either animal is either. Sooner or later there will definitely be fatalities! No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
I agree, it's only a matter of time until disaster. I would bet that he cares more about the turtles than the newts. But if one of the turtles were to actually eat a newt, the toxins could kill it.
