how often do you see your snakes?

carterelli Dec 26, 2003 02:58 PM

I'm just curious, because my snakes are so beautiful (I know we ALL think that about our snakes, hehe) but I never see them unless they are feeding, or unless I take them out to handle them. I realize they are nocturnal, but does anyone actually see their snake very often?

It depends on the snake, but I have one male who never uses a hide. He just sits out in the open all day. Hardly ever even tunnels in the aspen. He's happy and healthy and in a relatively quiet part of the house and just doesn't mind sitting out there. Most of my snakes come out to peek at me when I first get up. It's like they come out to say, 'hey, is it feeding day? No? Alright then, see you tomorrow'. And back they go into their boxes for the rest of the day. I have two that are also really active in the evening around nightfall. We definately see them more than our boa who will only come out if she's starving to death. If she's thirsty she will stick just her head out to get a drink and then retreat back to her hide. I can see why they do well in relatively small tanks since they wouldn't know the difference if they had a huge one anyway.

One of my corns does, indeed, hide most of the day. My snow, however, tends to peek out often when I am in my reptile room (formerly my dining room)...especially if it is anywhere near feeding day. If I stay in there for awhile she will often come out and cruise for food. My "other" ratsnakes (black, "greenish" and Texas) are in and out of their hides often. At any given time of the day, one or more of them is often out. Same with my garters. Therefore, I "see" snakes just about every day. Duffy

I,m sure this is just a coincedence, But all of my male corns seem to be alot more active than my females. I also have a snow corn who almst never goes in to his hide. On the other hand all of my females except one normal seem to hide all day. I guess it really just depends on the snake. My boas and pythons seem to be on the move almost all the time. So there is almost always a snake wanting out to play in my house.

My corn snake, Dugan is almost always out watching me, or slithering around his tank, He almost never hides, lol. Even sleeps out in the open, Or with his head poking out of the aspen bedding. :-]
