boscoman76 Dec 26, 2003 04:16 PM

An opinions?

Why do I not see people offering to stud out their males, locally of course? Anyone do this much?

I have a few extra males this season ready to breed with no female to breed to, so why not stud them out.

I live in the tidewater area of va beach. Anyone intrested let me know. I have

butter (proven)
sunglow (proven)
snow bubblegum (proven)

The main reason I think people don't do it is because of the possibility of passing diseases around.

I have a male that has been ready to mate since this past spring, but he won't get to mate until 2005. I'd rather wait until one of my females is ready to mate than letting someone else's snake mate with him and possibly contract some disease and die.

If you are a member of a herp club, ask around, I bet someone somewhere is lending a snake to breed it with someone else's snake, but I also bet that those people are close friends and the snakes are known to be completely healthy.

Go ahead and advertise your males, but be aware of the risks and make sure the person who owns the female knows what they are doing. It's also good to write up a written contract so you don't get screwed in the deal. I know someone who lent a male boa to another person and the subsequent babies that were born were sold and the guy who owned the male didn't get a cent from them.

Actually, funny you should mention it. I have a friend locally that has corn snakes. She and I met when we both bought from the same guy online and decided to ship together to save costs. We have discussed stud services between the snakes we have. It would allow us to work on more projects without the space and money for more snakes. It's a good deal for me because she just scored some butters that I wanted but couldn't afford right now. It's nice to have someone local to share this hobby with. We have talked about sharing a UPS shipping account, and I am snake sitting for her right now while she's out of town. (Oh no, 5 extra snakes! Poor me...They are so cute. Now I want one of her babies.) We can also bounce ideas off each other and gather info from each other as well. I just started breeding rats so she will get first choice of the leftovers I need to sell way cheaper than the petstore sells them. I don't know if this type of situation would always work out but so far I really like it.

I've been asking someone if when her male gets older will she offer him for studd. and i think that in some ways it is a good idea.
