Problem keeping humidity up

lastdoctor Dec 26, 2003 04:22 PM

I am having a problem keeping the humidity up in my cage. I have done everything from misting it to covering one side of the top to putting in a much larger water bowl. It is between 40-45%. I even went and picked up another hygormeter to make sure the other one wasn't faulty, and it is giving me the same result. The cage is a 20 gallon. Thanks,

Jeremy

40 to 45% is not a bad climate. you might just want to spray the cage down more often when the snake is in shed. they sell all kinds of humidity devices, ive never tried them so i cant tell you how effective they are.

i keep my 7 snakes in a walk in closet and the humidty is between 45-50% and they seem to shed just fine.

hope this helps

Aquariums are kind of challenging for heat and humidity.

You could insulate three sides of the aquarium with sheet Styrofoam to cut down on condensation on those sides (condensation on cold glass pumps moisture out of the air.

If it wouldn't interfere with a heat lamp you could cover the entire top with plastic and perhaps also insulation leaving only a minimum of holes for air exchange.

You're humidity might not be too bad - as long as you can get it higher during shed.

I have a 50 gallon glass tank with sliding screen lid. You'll see in the thread how I (and another guy) fixed our problem.

If it were me I would not panic about the cage humidity and instead give the snake a humid hide. My BPs have a tupperware box(appropriate sized for the snake) with a lid with an entrance hole. The box is filled with damp spaghnum moss. I keep that misted down about twice a week, as need be and then I don't sweat the humidity elsewhere in the cage. I do cover 2/3 of the top (50gal breeder tank) with sheets of plexiglass too. But I don't mist the cage at all. Nice sheds and no worries.
