Fire Belly Toad setup help (need lots of info please ^_^)

melisondra Dec 26, 2003 05:27 PM

A friend of my moms had a fire belly toad that someone gave her. She didnt really want it and knew I was into herps so she gave it to me. I have never had one before but have had lots of frogs lizards etc.

My question is mainly about its setup. The person who first had it made the cage one of those half land, half water deals with a waterfall running through the middle (one of those kits you can buy) He has a plastic log to hide under and the substrate is moss over gravel. I dont think he goes in the water too often and all it seems to do is grow algae.

Can I just make his cage gravel/moss and get rid of the waterfall, and put a large bowl of water or so in? (would be easier to clean out) Also are there any type of plants he might like in there? I have lots of pothos vines. It is a 20 gallon tank so its pretty big.

And last question is his diet. We have been feeding him crickets mainly, and I just bought wax worms today for my chameleons and threw one to him (which he pounced on right away) Should these be good for him then? or does he need anything else in his diet?

Sorry about the length but just wanted to ask this all at once. We have had him a couple months now and he has been doing fine, but I wanted to change the water thing if I can.

Thanks all and Merry (belated) Christmas!!

as long as he has water, either way dshould be fine. if you keep it how it is, make sure he has rocks or lilly pads or something to sit on so he doesnt have to swim- i picked up some silk lily pads at petsmart and my fire belly hardly ever leaves the water! they also like a lot of variety in their diets. they see something as food by movement. so, my guy will eat anything that is smaller than his mouth and wiggles. hope i helped
