Proud owner of juvenile Crested, a few more questions...

Scelus Dec 26, 2003 06:45 PM

Hey all, I posted a few weeks ago about buying a Crested Gecko... I finally have.
Anyways, I have a few questions regarding behavior and heating. If you could answer, I would be eternally grateful.

First off, I've had him/her for about four days now. The store I bought it from was keepng it in a small dish for my arrival. I had originally ordered two, but it seems that the other was too fragile after shipping. Back to the point, I shaped the vivarium to give it an abundance of hiding places, along with the option of arboreal (vines and leaves) or ground (basking branches, Calci-sand). Problem is, I don't often see it... even at night. I can confirm that it is drinking (as I have seen it), but I haven't seen any eating evidence. Also, I have not found any droppings to conclude from. When I have seen it out, it either basks on the ground or idly explores the barriers of glass. I haven't heard any tell-tale barks or growls either.
My question is, should he be more active at night? I'm waiting on the humidity gauge, so that could be the problem... but I spray with a waterbottle thrice a day. Also, I guess I could chalk the reclusive behavior to stress. Should I just give it another few weeks to acclimate to the new surroundings?

Lastly, after talking to the shop owner about lighting, he recommended a regular day-light bulb for day heating. Is this necessary? I'm already living in a heated climate (Southern California) and I'm afraid that the added heat would bake him.

Thanks again!

Well, I've answered a few questions myself.

I went to clean the cage today and found a load of shedded skin. The gecko is also having trouble gripping the glass with its forelimbs.

I'm going to up the humidity until the shedding is over.

I don't think you need any extra bulbs to keep him warm during the day. Crested geckos are perfectly happy around room temperature (70-75F) and shouldn't be kept in temps above 80F.
