I just bought one of these to use on my bearded dragons cage I was wondering if this bulb speeds up growth? Also does it have to be directly over my dragon in order for him to benefit from it?

Well... If you don't have it, your beardie will get metabolic bone disease. So, yeah, you need it for proper growth. Needs to be within 12" (really 12-16", but I use 12" to be safe) to give enough off.

First off before I bought the light I was using calcium dust with d3 so its not like I was abusing the guy just to let you know.
but you need UVB for the D3 to metabolize the calcium.
it's good that you got the bulb though.
That isn't completely true, if i remember correctly. UVB is needed to produce vitamine D3 in a bearded dragon's body. Supplimenting D3 into the dragon's diet ensures there is enough D3 to metabolize what calcium the dragon eats. There is still alot of debate whether a dragon can be healthy and fit using supplimented D3 alone instead of a UVB bulb. Personally I haven't been able to prove this can be done so use both methods to ensure all bases are covered.
Having a UVB bulb does, however, bring out alot more colour in a dragon then a regular light alone. This is something I have noticed personally. Once when I take my dragon out into natural sunlight in the summer and then when I switched from Repti-glo 5.0 bulb to a 8.0 bulb.
