"teenager" won't eat his veggies

redhed Dec 26, 2003 07:56 PM

Hi there - I am a somewhat new beardie owner; I got my ~6 month old male about 4 weeks ago. He seems pretty healthy, active, good weight and size, eats (and poops) fine, as far as crickets and worms go, but he doesn't eat many of his veggies, and I try and give him a variety, although perhaps not as much as I could. 3 weeks ago he actually ate some carrot and bok choy from my hand, but that was the first and last time (he'll eat crickets from my hand all the time). I've also tried a few different fruits, and kale, other dark leafy greens (not spinach), broccoli, and cauliflower.

Is there something else I should try that they consider especially tasty? I am worried he's not going to get all his nutrients; sometimes it looks as if he's eaten some veggies, but I can't be sure if he's actually eaten some or just scattered them all over while chasing crickets...

Also, the crickets are gut-loaded, and I put the vitamins on his veggies every 3rd day. Should I put it on every day, if he is eating so few, or would this still be potentially too much?

And finally, how many large (not giant) wax worms a day are too many? Aren't they rather like candy for a lizard?

Thanks!

Renee

try mixing some mealworms into the veggie mix.. put jsut a few chunks of carrot and some worms.. so he can see the worms.. he'll catch the carrot with his toungue and eventually he should eat veggies.. that's what i did with mine and now he loves them.. I thinkt hey dont' know they are food right off the bat and need to try them first

Waxworms are pretty much that, little nutritional value, explode when you try to "gutload" them, etc... I use them as an appetite stimulator for Draconis, but not much more beyond that. I just wish mine liked fruit, I can never get him to eat any...
