Will corn snakes eat each other???

heartmountain Dec 26, 2003 08:42 PM

I have some baby corns, how dangerouse would it be to house them together in groups of 3 or 4 per 10 gallon tank. They are all reletively the same size 8-10 inches 10grams.

Thanks,
Sean

It jsut depeneds if you read some of the previuos posts some have kept corns together with no problem. But each snake is unique and you never know when you might get a cannibal. I would be afraid of the possibilty of stress. I house all of my snakes individually. S IMO I say if you can go seperate within a rack type system..homemade or purchased. If you do keep them togther just remember ther is always a possibility no matter how remote.

This is always a touchy subject here.
There are many beleifs, ideas and opinions on the subject so let us start with my own.
It is not truly worth the risk. Yes, there are a lot of people who keep multiple corns together with success, BUT ..there are things to consider.
If one of the snakes regurgitates its food or has a runny stool there is no way to tell which one has the problem.
If one gets sick it is a pretty high likelyhood that the others will also.
Some corns are stressed by the precense of other snakes. You might have one or more of the snakes that will have eating problems and possibly other problems due to stress.
There is always a chance of canibalism. Even if you separate the snakes when feeding there is the possibility that the lingering smell of mouse could trigger a feeding responce in one of the snakes. On feeding day you have four. The next day you look into the container to see only three and one of these is extremely full. There is also a good chance that this hatchling could die if it can't digest a meal of that size.
You can get 6 quart rubbermade shoe boxes for around $2.00 each so habitat cost isn't high. For three or four dollars you can get enough aspen shavings to accomodate four "shoe box" habitats for quite a while.
Heating is alo pretty easy. You can get two heat pads at Wal-Mart for less then the cost of an under tank heater.
Two shoe box habitats can easily share a heat pad.
So, in my opinion, although people do it successfuly I just don't think it is worth the risk.

hatchlings together. If you have one that does by chance eat one of its litter mates, seperate it immediately.

If you are only keeping 2 snakes, though, I would recommend to house them seperately.
