Veiled??............Day gecko??

leopard_man Dec 26, 2003 11:11 PM

Hi all!! I was just cruising through the local pet store today and given its christmas there are always deals and such and this is usually the time of year when I purchase my new pets. I currently own 2 leopard geckos, 1 tiger salamander, and a scoal of piranhas. I have been interested in chameleons for quite some time and I have always enjoyed watching them at the store and today they had the cutest little veilds I have seen for quite some time. I am looking into getting another reptile but I am not quite sure and I figured maybe you nice folks can help me out. My question straight forward is........ what are harder to care for, veilds or Mada. Giant Day geckos?? I love both of them very much but I can not seem to find too much info and I am just curious as to which one you folks would suggest given longetivity, level of maintenance, and handling.

Any suggestions or thoughts will be much appreciated,
Thanks again,
Keith.

in my opinion.
If you are going to get a chameleon I would do extensive research before buying one. They can be hard to care for especially if you do not have the proper information.
Pet stores are not usually the best bet for info or a good healthy animal (no matter how cute they are)
Veileds take very limited handling because they are no too fond of it and can stress out if handled too much.
I treat my Day geckos as a hands off type of pet beautiful to look at but never handled.
Their skin tears easily as a defense mechanism to escape predators so should not really be touched often.
I only touch mine to clean the cages.
There is a good article on Day geckos in the recent issue of Reptiles Magazine.
If you purchase an animal I would recommend Reptalys (A regular poster here) or Kammerflage kreatons for a veiled.
They can get you a top notch animal and will give you wonderful after purchase support in keeping them healthy.
Be wary of cheap pet store veileds especially babies as the majority of them don't make it (in my opinion)
Good luck.
