Places to look for emergency food

Arklier Dec 27, 2003 01:53 AM

Just to let everyone know, if you're in a food pinch, Petco carries D. melanogaster, and Petsmart carries D. Hydei. I buy new blood every couple of months to start colonies, and it only costs $5.

yeah, both of those places have been carrying ff's for a while...unfortunately neither of those stores are in my area. However, I've found a couple of local 'cricket farmers' that supply the bait and tackle shops as well as pet stores in this area and I can get pinheads at ultra low prices (1000 for 3 or 4 bucks)...30 minute drive but well worth it. In the summer, I rely on my termites but still culture ff's.

Hey,

What do you mean by bloodline? I think if you mix two different sources of flightless FF's together, youll end up with ones that do fly.

Sorry if i misunderstood,

another thing you might try, many colleges and universities do research on fruit flies, and often times they will let you have some(many) if you are in a pinch or need mite free replacement. Just contact the biology office and ask which professors are using fruit flies, and then call them.

i went there today (both pet stores) and unfortunately they dont have any, and never had... another pet store had them, but they wanted 20 dollars for a 3 week old culture!

The Petco around here stopped carrying ffs. When I asked I was told there "were no flies in some of the vials" when they unpacked them so they just threw them out. Go figure.

Nice board btw packed with great info. I spent last night reading each thread.
