A Very Strange Find

eve Dec 27, 2003 10:46 AM

A while ago I posted a message about my Gorgo, swallowing funny !
Well, That subsided. There was never any respitory problems, noises, discharge, no mouth rot as I am familiar with those symptoms. Nothing !
Except for absolutely no interest in eating, she seemed fine.
Her color was a bit drabber than normal, especially when not on her limb basking.

Anyway I have been coddling her, warm soaks, opening her mouth atleast every other day and putting in a night crawler. So forth.

** Well today I went in the reptile room to feed everybody else,
and saw her on the ground of her reptarium, resting on a rock near her water tub. It scared me as her color was bad and she looked to be in a weird position.

Anyway this is what I found, a pile of eggs, and shes still
laying !

Problem is I have had Gorgo since Sept of 2002 Approx. 16 or 17 months. No male, She was huge when I got her then. I remember posting and Froggie B also thought she was gravid. Nothing ever happened she stayed fat and normal.

Recently, she started to act weird about 2 months now.
My question is what do I do with the eggs?
Think they are infertile from all that time?
And why would she have kept them dormid all that time? Could she have retained sperm all this time???

An EXTREMELY surprised Mom

Since we aren't totally certain that MHDs don't retain sperm, in fact I had one female produce fertile eggs almost a year after being separated from the male, I would keep the eggs just to see. It is possible for MHDs to produce eggs without a male being present and they will lay infertile eggs under those circumstances. My guess would be that these are infertile but I never toss them without being certain!

So, no matter what happens to the eggs, your female is probably in good condition or she most likely wouldn't have produced eggs, especially if they aren't fertile. I am betting that she will start to perk up and regain her normal color and eating patterns within a week. If the eggs are infertile she probably won't produce more, but I would make sure she is pumped up on her vitamins and calcium and would see if she will take some pinky mice to help fatten her back up.

Good luck,
