tortoise owners in midwest

fishyone Dec 27, 2003 12:58 PM

How many tortoise owners are there in the midwest? And what kind of torts do you have? I live in Iowa with 2 leopard torts and was curious what others had around here.

Are your tortoises adults or hatchlings? What do you do with them in the winter? My leopards are hatchlings, and they are inside now. What kind of enclosure do you have? Do you mix species? I would like to have more than one species, but do not have the space to keep them all inside in the winter. Just looking for more ideas on how to house mine once they are grown.

I have hatchlings of red foots and 2 year old leopards my russians are adult. I keep them inside except when its on the hot days in the summer. I make a pen out of wood but should be maid out of concrete. Never mix speices! For example if I mixed a leopard with a red foot the leopard would be the one in trouble cause red foots need alot of humidity and leopards like it dry. Each tortoise needs differnt needs,But if there out side just walking with each other then that should be fine. When my leopards get older and red foots im going to make pens in my basement(ideas on tortoise pens just scroll down on the tortoise form). The red foots are easier to keep inside then leopards due to size. I keep all my tortoises in 40 gallons but next yeat I might try a differnt enclosure for my russians. Any more qestions feel free to ask and theres some goos ideas on this form for pens!

I live in St. Louis, MO.

I have 4 russians that live outdoors about 6 months of the year, and two leopards that are always indoors.

I also live in Illinois. I have a juvenile Redfoot tortoise
and 4 aquatic turtles. My aquatics live outside all summer
(protected of course) and my Redfoot lives inside mainly due
to his size. He does have an enclosure that he can spend
time outside when I am home. When he gets bigger he will be
able to spend all day outside.

I live in IL. and currently keep redfoots and leopards.

My Redfoots range from 4"-8" and are kept indoors during the winter and go outdoors when the weather permits.

My Leopards range from 2"-4" and are currently being kept indoors because of their small size.

I live in IL and have a hatchling Sulcatta that I just purchased. Speedy will remain inside until his size becomes appropriate. He will join my group of animals in my EDU shows and seems to fit in quite fine already.

I live in Central IL. I have Greeks and Russians. I let them outside on hot dry days as the humidity is very high here. The IL river is about 15 miles away.

Mid WI- Russians, P.A.Brygooi,W.Hermanns,Leopards,3Toed Boxies,C.A.Manni, and one Sulcata. Outside all Summer, large indoor pens in Winter.

fishyone Dec 29, 2003 09:52 PM

Do you have pics of your indoor enclosures that you can post?

Jody Dec 30, 2003 10:34 AM

Sorry, am not a film wizard. My pens are large homemade plywood and plexiglass, each built for specific species. Honu, my Sulcata has the run of my breezeway during the day, along with the Hermanns, and the largest Leopard.I use heat and uva/uvb lights 12 hrs. a day. Most of my Russians are sleeping, except for the confused females who are laying eggs now instead of in July! But i expect them to sleep once they're done. If i can ever get one of my kids to take some photos, i will post them.Thanx, and Happy New Year!

I live in Indiana. I have 5 adult Leopard Tortoises and 5 juvinile Leopards. The Young ones stay inside year round. My adults go outside from normally June to Late Sept. or early Oct. The rest of the year my male lives in a 6 ft by 2 ft. horse trough and my girls wander the room that i keep them in. I have a room built in the basement for my bearded dragons, leopard geckoes, leopard tortoises and water turtles
