5 hatchlings total

Bloodbat Dec 27, 2003 03:25 PM

I cut the remaining three eggs open this afternoon (I cut a fourth open a few days ago). The three were dead, and from the looks of them all they seemed to have died at the same time. I suspect about a week or two prior to being ready to hatch. So, I need to figure out what I am doing or not doing at the end that is killing the babies as this is the second clutch in which I have lost some at the end stages of development.

Here are the totals:

Laid June 9th and 10th (egg #11)

1 Dead 12/22
2 pipped 12/20 hatched 12/22
3 pipped 12/22 hatched 12/24
4 died (months ago)
5 pipped 12/06 hatched 12/08 (Pearl)
6 died (months ago)
7 pipped 12/17 hatched 12/17
8 Dead 12/27
9 Dead 12/27
10 pipped 12/16 hatched 12/17
11 Dead 12/27

Next clutch due to hatch at the end of February or early March...

Hey Bloodbat,

Well done!

Sometimes reducing the humidity a few weeks prior to hatching can help. For a while we were keeping the eggs at the same humidity the entire duration and we kept losing eggs. It seemed like the egg was absorbing too much of the water and it was crushing them inside the egg. Are your eggs starting to sink in about 2 weeks before hatching?

Way to go on the hatchlings. Congratulations. I'm wondering, how large are the parents and what are their ages, and what size enclosure do you keep them in? Are they together all the time?
Thanks and congrats again,
Mike
