My kingsnakes do well with a heat gradient of about 73 degrees farenheit on the cool end, and about 85 degrees on the warm end. Be sure to place a hide box on each end of your enclosure so the snake can feel at home. As far as being bitten, it'll happen sooner or later if you keep snakes long enough. A bite is not a big deal, feels like pin pricks. Be sure to keep hands away during feeding time, as this is when most bites happen (at least in my experience). If you handle your snakes regularly and gently, bites shouldn'e be a problem for you.
