geckos & waxworms

sle13 Dec 27, 2003 06:29 PM

I've got a gecko that doesn't seem interested in coming out of his wetbox or even eating. If i see him twice a week it's unusual. have tried all the normal foods with him but he seems stuck on wax-worms which i know are addictive but as he doesn't seem bothered by food at the moment i'd rather he eat them than nothing at all.
Do waxworms need dusting in supplements as i think the supplements could be the problem with his previous eating habits.
Any ideas.
Thanx

Why don't you try silkworms or sweetworms/butterworms? They're soft, squishy, and easy to catch like waxworms, but much more nutritious.

My babies seemed to hate dusted food-- they'd run at it like they wanted it, sniff it, and reject it...They would accept non-dusted food rather easily, though. Try offering non-dusted crickets and mealworms-- if your gecko goes for it, maybe buy another type of calcium suppl., to see if he/she is a brand snob? Also, I've never done this but I've heard it suggested that you squish the guts out of a waxworm, and coat the crickets or mealworms with that. It's easier to stomach squishing a waxworm if you do it when they're still all catatonic from being in the fridge, and use a pill crusher to mash them up with...

Hope this helps.

I'm assuming you're American-- correct me if I'm wrong.

You can get your silkworms from: http://www.mulberryfarms.com/or http://americancricketranch.com/ -- these are the only two places I know of thus far.

If anyone is interested in trying butterworms/sweetworms, you can get them from http://www.permitme.com/butterworms/index.html or http://www.rainbowmealworms.com/ .

Hope this helps.
