Leaving for a week, what to do with the fruit flies?

poisonfrog420 Dec 27, 2003 07:50 PM

I am going to be leaving town for 10 days on Monday. I rember reading about a method of leaving a fruit fly culture in the tank with the frogs so as they hatch the frogs can eat them. The basic idea was to leave a culture in there with a hole so the flies could come out. I rember reading about people loseing frogs becuse they get into the culture and die. I also read somewhere that you should cover the container so they can not see inside. How do you do this? Thanks, Jake.

From my understanding, using a plastic deli cup with lid, this is how it works.

You make a culture and time it so when you leave the culture is exploding with flies. Poke some small holes in it so the flies can escape but frogs cant get in. The holes dont have to be big at all. And thats it. If im wrong, please some one correct me.

I use coffe cups with lids. and either start cultures in the cups 10 days before I leave or divide up ready made cultures(five cups per culture) that haven't started producing flys yet. The day I leave I put a hole in the side of the cup and put the cup in tank.

I did this over thanksgiving and christmas for a week each time and find the cultures produce plenty of flys. If I knew a way to supppliment without dusting I would do it all the time. the constant large food supply makes the frogs stout by time I get back. I do like to put a piece of bannana in the tank to keep the flys from over running and stressing out the frogs. The cups I made for thanksgiving lasted 2 weeks or longer.
