Misting

buffysmom Dec 27, 2003 11:28 PM

I've read a few posts where people talk about misting their BTS. Is this necessary or recommended? How humid should their environments be? I understood them to be a relatively low humidity lizard, but perhaps I've been misinformed.

Australian BTS and Indonesian BTS come from significantly different environments. In general, Australian BTS live in drier conditions than their Indonesian counterparts. Thus, the Australian species/subspecies should be kept drier. Some misting is sometimes helpful when the animal is shedding, but I don't recommend it on a daily basis. To maintain some moisture in the enclosure, it's better to have a water bowl or substrate that doesn't dry up too quickly and that is kept slightly moist on one end. To reiterate, the moisture level should be a bit higher with Indonesian BTS than Australian ones.

I have an Irian Jaya captive bred BTS, and until recently, I have kept her relatively dry, and her water has been in a bowl, and changed daily. A couple of weeks ago, I thought i'd try spraying the water onto the leaves of the plastic plants and on the walls of the viv, as she comes from a higher humidity area than most BTS's so this may be beneficial for her. I have noticed an increased level of activity, and to some extent, a better appetite and easier shedding (something she before had a problem with) so I see this as a beneficial addition to her environment and her well being.
