ADF and Golden Algae Eater - who will win? Advice needed -

kristennc Dec 28, 2003 08:09 AM

Hi all -

I am new to the aquarium world. My daughter has a wonderful 10 gallon tank set up. In it she has tetras and one Golden Algae Eater. She rec'd an ADF about a month ago who is only about 2 inches long and rather skinny.

Recently, the algae eater (who is about 1.5 inches only) has become annoying - chasing the largest tetra and swimming all over the frog. I haven't seen the algae eater actually suck on the frog, though I have seen the frog snap at the algae eater.

I want my frog to live! I have been (per advice that I now know to be poor, thanks to this forum) feeding the frog Frog Bites - and he is able to snatch them from the rocks each time I feed him. I've never handled any kind of blood worm or any other fish food, but I have to admit that it sounds gross.

I'll be heading out to PetSmart tomorrow to bite the bullet and look for better food for my frog.

Does anyone have any advice for me? I don't want to get rid of the algae eater - she does a wonderful job in the tank. But the frog just seems more important here.

Thanks so much for your thoughts!

Kristen

I have 4 afican dwarf frogs (2 males and 2 very plump females) with 4 chinese golden algae eaters (got then when they were about 1.5" now they are about 3"-4" long and plump and 2 groumis. in a heavly planted 15g tank with a driftwood cave. i feed the frogs black worms and have found eggs on the underside of some of the plants, that im guessing are the frogs not sure, because when they hatch i think they got eatten or sucked up the filter. this shows that the ADF are not being hurrased and just left alone. diffrent fish have diffrent personalitys so its hard to guage what fishes will do. There are diffrent ways that seem to work. In this case the 4 CGAE seem to put all there agression in chasing there own kind, leaving the other inhabitants alone. but this has its draw backs, if u have 2 in the tank the weaker will be bullied and stressed, may even die. having more just crowds the tanks. having good hidding spaces my help also.
