laying question...

lele Dec 28, 2003 10:05 AM

...I have looked over the articles and my books but can't seem to find a depth of substrate for laying. these will be infertile so I am not concerned about keeping them but want Luna to be comfortable as possible when the time comes. Thanks!

I've usually had it at around 10" and they almost always dig right to the bottom. I've had on a few occasions a female only dig partway down and lay them and once a panther laid them only about 2" deep, but it's usually all the way down.

We use a very deep Rubbermaid style enclosure for our laying chamber. We use about 18-24" of soil/sand mixture for them to lay in. We have had most females dig all the way to the bottom and a few only dig about 10" down. We had our Mellers Chameleons only dig about 3 inches into the soil and basically just cover the eggs with leaves. So it all depends on the animal but 10" or more will usually suffice without any problems.
