Lighting: Anyone consider using VHO?

Brad Alexander Dec 28, 2003 11:50 AM

VHO, very high output fluorescent lighting used for fish aquariums where sun light is needed for reef life (corals and such). I've had a 100 gallon reef tank for several years and I use a 250 watt metal halide along with VHO's and a power compact (for those that don't know, a power compact is also a type of high output fluorescent bulb). These lights are designed to mimic th sun and have a tremendous effect on reef life in an aquarium. I would assume they would work well for reptiles as well but have failed to find a UVB/UVA rating for these lights. The serious draw back with these lights is the expense. The VHO bulbs are not usually too bad but the ballasts will dip into your pocket book.

So again, my question is: Do anyone of you fine knowledgable people out there know if this type of lighting will work for our dry scaled friends?

Here is a link to some of that type of lighting.

I have a friend who uses metal halide PLANT bulbs to breed monitors.

I dont think our chams would need something that high output, not to mention the HEAT they produce.

You have to remember that halides are very very hot, so i dont know if, from a stress standpoint, that woudl be a good choice for chams, but im sure we could look into it.

Agreed, but my main question was in regards to VHO's which are fluorescent and do not put out anywhere near the heat a metal halide would.

Thanks for the response,

Brad

Hi Brad,

Have you tried contacting the bulb manufacturers? They should be able to give you that information.
