Handling hatchlings

K1LOS Jun 04, 2003 12:21 AM

I just got two very young leos (they are probably 3 inches head to end of tail), and am wondering the best way to getting them accustomed to handling? They seem to get very stressed when i try too pick them up, and they are very fast. It's hard to pick them up gently. Anyways, let me know how you got your geckos to accept handling. Thanks

the thing people dont realize about handling geckos is you got to be gentle with them. You cant just grab them with force. If a gecko doesnt respond well to a gentle attempt at handling, it probably doesnt want to be handled. In my experience, all geckos have their own personality. Their character is ussually innate and doesnt change with age.

The best way that I have found so far is to put one of my hands face up on the floor of the enclosure and kind of herd them into that hand with the other one. When you have them in the palm of your hand, cover it with your other hand. Never grab at your gecko.

You really shouldn't hold them too much when they are young, probably only a couple of minutes each day. I usually only hold them for a minute or 2 when they are small, then when they are a little bigger, like a juvie, that is when I start to handle them more, probably up to 20 minutes a day. This works well with my geckos, they are all pretty tame (at least the ones I raised from babies).

Good luck,
