Tank Pictures

Derek Benson Dec 28, 2003 04:34 PM

These are 2 pictures of my Phyllobates aurotaenia tank. It's a 20 gallon long with stream, 2 fireball broms, draceana, creeping fig, water grass from Black jungle, etc. On the top view picture, there is a pump hidden under a piece of cork bark in the upper left hand corner. There's also a brom mounted on the cork piece. The creeping fig has now almost over taken the tank and the moss has grown up the sides of the tank about 1.5" I got the moss form my backyard, it has also decresed the width of the stream by growing in it.

I was just curious how many other people have tried this plant from Black Jungle. Mine seems to be growing up fine, but it hasn't spread much if any. I was just curious if anyone else has gotten it to spread, and if so what are your conditions like? Mine is planted in the pond area, but the water moves pretty quickly.

The moss growing into the stream area has blocked off a lot, if not all the current created by the pump. My L. brasiliensis hasn't grow much, but has thrown off these small versions, like pups inot the water. I've found about 4 so far.

L. brasiliensis is a high light requirement plant. I have not had a huge amount of luck with it and my plant guy at the fish store says I am crazy for even messing around with it that there is no hope. I have a very tall tank and since my light source is about 3 ft above the surface of the water he says it will never prosper and only die very slowly. I am sticking with it and i have changed my lighting to include some more blue light to hopefully penetrate the waters surface but i dont think it will help much. Other aquatics exist that will better suit my conditions but i want to be as true to my biotope as i can. So i may just have to go without vegetation altogether. Although my endler's love the grass for keeping their fry. and it is great for harboring microscopic foods for the fry. Java moss will do great as well as any of the anubias plants and hair grass. Asia and Afica and the US that's the problem for me. Not a lot of plant life grows in the streams and puddles under the canopy of the S.A rain forest. Black water = very little vegetation. A long explanation, sorry. If you are ever in NYC go to New World Aquariums and speak to Oliver. He is definitely a plant enthusiast and IMO amd expert on aquatics and pretty darn good with orchids and aroids.
take it easy

No, it's all the moss from my backyard. There's a clump of water grass in the pond area on the far right hand corner. The moss just started growing verticle, unlike pillow moss.
